As per an American Association of Primatologists bulletin:
“Currently the United States government recognizes chimpanzees as Endangered in the wild but Threatened in the United States. The Fish and Wildlife Service is considering changing the listing status of chimpanzees in the United States from Threatened to Endangered. The F & WS will consider comments from the public on this proposed change in the listing through Oct. 31, 2011. The reasons for the proposed change and the procedure to develop regulatory rules following a change, should it be adopted by the Fish and Wildlife Service, are stated in the entry in the Federal Register (see http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/
